04/26/2008Camera trigger voltage?
- Hi, i have a vivitar af730afm flash i used on my old minolta SLR,it is 6 volts.Does any body know if its ok to use on a DSLR Sony alpha 100?Can't seem to find anywhere in the manuel for maximum voltage aloud for this camera.
- Best Answer:Are you sure about the trigger voltage? Vivitar has a tendency to switch suppliers a lot, and as a result, their flash trigger voltages are not always hard and fast numbers.
Generally speaking, 6 volts is about the highest recommended voltage for any high-end camera, even though the ISO spec says 24 volts should be okay. So, theoretically, the Vivitar should work.
I myself wouldn't use the Vivitar on your Alpha 100, as you lose too many features like TTL metering. I recommend instead that you get the appropriate Sony flash. If you must use the Vivitar, get a Wein HSHS safe sync:

Or test YOUR vivitar with a voltage meter. Like I said, Vivitars are cheap flashes which aren't consistent from run to run. I won't risk my expensive camera with a $30 flash. The Vivitars I own go for my older non-electronic cameras or to use as slave flashes with an optical trigger.
