04/26/2008I am looking for a really good digital camera!?
  • I want a camera that can take very professional pictures and can take pictures in black and white and sepia as well as color. And if it's not too outrageously priced that helps too. I am hoping to become a photographer and I need a good camera.
  • Best Answer:I would go for a Canon G9 (which has received great reviews). I have one and it's just like an SLR (without the bulk and the price), but is still considered a professional digital camera.
The G9 has 12.1 megapixels, 6x optical zoom, shoots in RAW and does all of the color things that you specified. You can purchase accessories such as wide angle and telephoto lenses, an underwater housing, and speedlite flashes (which work with the G9 because of the hotshoe). There are also included features such as panoramic mode, color accent /swap, time lapse, and amazing video (just to name a few). The Canon G9 currently sells for about $500 (which is not too outrageously priced considering all of the amazing features you get).
My dad, a professional photographer, is even impressed with the quality of this little (but powerful) camera.
  • Answer:The exact camera you want depends on the type of photography you want to do and what you want to spend.

Most important is to get a relatively simple one that you find easy to use and handle and to buy it with a few spare batteries: you'll need them. Also buy the largest size memory card you can from a reputable brand name but don't bother with the latest ultra-fast memory cards unless you're certain your camera can take full advantage of it.

An expensive camera certainly won't make you into a good photographer, and a good photographer can capture superb images on really basic & cheap equipment. Buy a basic camera to start with and consider taking lessons. When you know what you like and know how to take good images, you can upgrade your camera. More megapixels does not mean better either; it can actually make the image poorer quality. About 7MP is more than adequate for almost anyone, and 3MP is fine for A4 prints as long as you don't intend to make selective enlargements.

Finally, always shoot in colour, preferably in RAW mode. If you want sepia or monochrome (b&w) then convert the image using software.

    Hope this helps your choice.
  • Answer:I assume you'll want a digital SLR. What price range are you looking at? "not too outrageously" is too subjective be quanatative/objective, some may think a $2,000 is outrageous while others think that is rather cheap for a nice SLR.

I would start by visiting some websites
    cameralabs.com
    dpreview.com
consumer reports if you have a subscription
  • Answer:Nikon Coolpix is a good brand, it takes really good quality pictures, has lots of options like the ones you listed & more
The one my sister got was just $83 dollars, which isn't all that bad.
