04/27/2008Does applying for an apartment lower my credit score?
- I recently applied to rent an apartment, and the landlord ran a credit check.
I'm also monitoring the credit score on my own. It decreased recently. As far as I know, nothing else happened.
Would applying to rent an apartment decrease my credit score?
- Best Answer:If they ran a bureau then, yes, it could... but only by about 3 to 5 points
- Answer:Yes, it does. If you plan on looking at more apartments I would apply each place that I like all within 7 days. Inquiries done for a specific purchase such as vehicle, apartment, etc. down within a short time frame doesn't affect your credit as much as applying once a week or even once a month. Those inquiries done in a short time count as one inquiry. Any "hard" inquiry hurts credit. "Soft" inquiries such as insurance or you checking your own credit will not. Another good thing is that inquiries can be easily removed from credit reports.
- Answer:depends on how many times they pull your credit. also if you pay off some things or if something drops off of your credit report it is not always a good thing that could be only one out of a few trade lines that are keeping your credit decent. open a jcpennys card buy maybe $100 worth of stuff on it, pay it off as soon as you can and keep the card open that will help your score go up a little. just dont go crazy on spending the card and not paying it. also if your parents have a credit card that they have not been late on see if they will add you as a signer. that will also help your score.
- Answer:If your credit score is pulled several times within a certain amount of time it can and will negatively effect your credit score. Perhaps this is what you are seeing. The same thing happened to mine when we were shopping around for lendors. It was not drastic, but just be aware of it.

- Answer:Yes everytime you have someone run your credit it lowers your credit score. Limit the amount of people looking at your credit.
