04/26/2008What should we do regarding our new apartment?
  • My friend and I got the keys to our new apartment that we just put the security deposit on. When we got inside, we saw these black plastic pest bait things all over. At least 10 of them altogether, at least two in every room. I remember seeing them when we checked out the apartment but didn't know what they were until today. Anyway, we saw two dead bugs that seemed to look like roaches, but I don't see any images online that look quite the same. Also, regarding those black bait things, I see they only make them for ants and roaches and I don't see any dead things that look like ants! I'm convinced that regardless of what they are, I want my money back and will find a new place, but my roommate loves the place and wants to stay. I've only seen roaches once in my life. Never again. Curious what people in Yahooland think!
  • Best Answer:Obviously I would give the landlord the keys back and ask for your deposit back. If they're decent people you might even get your money back. Sure you can't break a lease for roaches, but you could raise a fuss about it being a health hazard and threaten them with a lawsuit. Because you don't have a lease, you could just walk away and bite the bullet on the deposit. Oh, and spraying doesn't do crap, if you found two then I guarantee you there are a hundred more in the walls. Talk to them ASAP. Happy hunting for a new apartment!
  • Answer:Im confused as to how you got the keys to the apartment and haven't signed a lease yet? U are technically not in possession for the property. Check with the property to see if they have a satisfaction guarantee-I know the property I work for does which sets guidelines as to if you the resident can't be satisfied then you can leave within so many days with no obligation other than the days you actually possessed the property. And also find out what their pest control policy is. Usually pest control is the resident's responsibility--but in your case you wouldn't know that BECAUSE U DIDN'T SIGN THE LEASE
  • Answer:RELAX. Maybe they are super bug haters like you, and they are being way overprotective to not rent out a bug apartment. Would you prefer to move into an apartment where the landlords dont take the extra expense to do pest control?
Solution: make your roomate promise to kill any bugs that freak you out
  • Answer:The presence of bug traps is not grounds to break a lease.
  • Answer:Normally, when you rent an apartment, you do a "walk-through inspection" with the manager or landlord, and if you have ANY comments or observations, THAT is when you make them. When you saw them when you first looked at the apartment, you should have ASKED what they were at that time. THAT'S why apartment managers let you look at apartments before you decide to move INTO one.
I've lived in three apartments in the past 15 years and have never found any unpleasant surprises when I first moved in.

If you see dead roaches now, you'll probably see live ones sooner or later. And that's NOT just cause to break a lease. Just tell the apartment manager that you want PEST CONTROL to keep after the bugs.
