04/26/2008Can use Wi-Fi but not Ethernet link on wireless router after reinstall of Windows XP?
- I am using a notebook/laptop computer, with hard-line DSL delivered via provided modem, provided through a wireless router (D-Link DIR-300) with ethernet ports on it for wired access.
This laptop mainly connect through wi-fi, but still use ethernet cable every now and then. In the past, I could connect an ethernet cable to one of the ethernet ports on the router and get acess this way.
Recently I re-installed everything on this notebook (restored the system using manufacturer-provided disc) after backing up all my files. Afterwards I can use wi-fi on the same network/router but when I connect to the router via Ethernet cable, I keep suffering from DHCP/ I.P Assignment issues and haven't been able to connect to the 'net via Ethernet since.
I did use a driver update for my Ethernet network Adaptor - I got it come from Windows Update after I did the re-install. It may be an issue.
Anyone got suggestions on what is causing my problems with wired access, and how to fix them?
- Best Answer:First off check the laptops manufacturing website and pick up their latest LAN drivers for your laptop and install them.
Second check your IP and make sure it is not set to static but DHPC, assuming your router is running DHCP that is.
You can do this by going to Network Connections under Control panel and right clicking on the ethernet connection. Click properties and select "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click properties.
Make sure "Obtain an IP address automatically" is selected.
Also make sure "Obtain DNS servers automatically" is also selected below.
Then close down those pages and attempt to reconnect to the router via ethernet.
