04/26/2008Static IP on private LAN to DHCP at Coffee shop?
  • I have a private home network where my router (LINKSYS WRT300N) has reserved IP addresses based on MACs for my laptop and various desktops. For each computer I had to manually put in the IP and DNS servers in the network settings.

    All works fine.

However, when I go to a coffee shop or other WiFi hotspot with my laptop, it obviously won't let their DHCP server assign an address.

My question is, is there any way for me to have it work seamlessly without having to constantly change everything to DHCP when I'm on the road and then back again when I get home? I only have one NIC.

I found programs like Netswitcher but unless absolutely necessary I'd rather not download programs to do that.

Thanks, best answer will be chosen!
  • Best Answer:It depends on if you have a software program for your wireless card or not. If you do then somewhere in the program you should be able to make different profiles and when you roam about just change it on the fly. If that is not the case then I am assuming in your wireless properties in the tcp/ip settings you have everything configured under the general tab and not the advanced tab. Came across this myself a few years back. Put all the home settings under the advanced tab and leave the general all auto. When you switch networks it should switch to the general settings or advanced without a hitch.
