04/26/2008Whats so bad about a 4 cylinder?
  • i dont kno much about cars, but im looking to buy one soon. my dad is trying to help me out but everything i find he shoots down. today is was because the jeep compass was a 4 cylinder. but he doesnt want me to get a v8 either. he said a 6 cylinder is what i need. whats the difference? or what problems would a 4 cylinder have? im lost...
  • Best Answer:nothing wrong with four cylinders any more than a v8 it what they are in that matters and a jeep with a four cylinder is a joke.... it wouldnt have any power a 6 would be in between.... listen to your dad he has been driving a bit longer than you think maybe he knows a bit more...you want advice go with something that is tried and true go with a brand or model thata been around a while something they have made for years sure some four banger have the power of a v8 and some 6 banger were junk also just like v8's.... always wise to listen to your old man
  • Answer:It's like this:

    V4 = ~$100 gas/month = 0 to 40 mph like 20 secs (weak)
    V6 = ~$150 gas/month = 0 to 40 mph like 10 secs (good)
    V8 = ~$200 gas/month = 0 to 40 mph like 5 secs (strong)

    It's narrow down to what's important to you, the money on gas or how strong the engine is?

    That's why your dad pick V6, it's okay on money on gas and okay on power.
  • Answer:One thing I hated about my old one was when I tried to merge onto the highway, it had no pick-up. All these lorrys and cars would bear down on me and I'd have my pedal to the metal but still it was chugging along at 40 mph. I agree with your Dad. V8's are gas guzzlers - and with the price of gas, you'd hate it. 6 cylinders are perfect.
  • Answer:Nothing whatsoever wrong with a 4-cylinder. With gas pushing 4 bucks a gallon, gas mileage has to be a consideration, unless you are swimming in cash.

    I've had a 4-cylinder Camry for 2 years - no problems, adequate acceleration for the highway - what's not to like?
  • Answer:Well, the 4 cylinder cars are slower, and can't really pick up speed that fast. V6 is the best bet, its pretty gas efficient, good with pick up speed. Unless you want to go in between, you can get a Volvo 5 Cylinders.
  • Answer:The difference is the power. V6 has more horse power than 4 cylinder. Just listen to your dad, he knows what is best for you. Try to look in Edmunds.com for used car.
  • Answer:well you probably have really good mpg but horrible hp. So its really just a trade off between the two. Having high gas milage and having low hourse power is tipical for a 4 cyl unless u mod it.
  • Answer:why would you need a v6?4 cyl is more mature then v6, technology wise. Plus the gas price keep sky rocket! its not wise to get a v6 or v8 right now.
  • Answer:I am no car expert, but driving experience tells me the answer is the way they drive. The more cylinders a car has... the faster it accelerates.
  • Answer:Four cylinders was good enough for the Porsche 944.
